Trapper Johns Canoe Livery Reopens in Grove City Under New Ownership

GROVE CITY, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio canoe livery that closed in 2024 after more than 50 years is reopening Monday under new ownership.

Trapper John’s, located at 7141 London-Groveport Road in Grove City, is once again offering canoeing and kayaking on Big Darby Creek. The reopening follows the closure by the Kaufman family, who operated Trapper John’s for over five decades and closed it last May before listing it for sale.

The site has been refurbished by new owners Nick Coughlin and Emily Mayes, who bought the property last October for $440,000, according to records from the Franklin County Auditor’s Office.

“The river is calling — and we’re ready to help you answer,” a social media post from Trapper John’s announcing the May 19 opening read. “Whether you’re planning a peaceful paddle, a fun day with friends, or a new adventure, we’ve got canoes, kayaks and everything you need to get out on the water.”

The sale also included the Creekside Café, known for its signature lattes and baked goods, which was closed last year during the change in ownership. The café is set to reopen later this summer.

Under a 1993 agreement, Trapper John’s remains the only commercial livery permitted to operate on Big Darby Creek, which The Nature Conservancy describes as “one of the most biologically diverse streams of its size in the Midwest.”

Trapper John’s accepts walk-ins and offers various trips, such as the Sampler Trip for $35 per person ending just before the I-71 bridges, the Lower Trip for $45 per person ending at State Route 762, and the 9-Mile Trip for $60 per person.

Each rental includes a 15- to 17-foot canoe or kayak, paddles, personal flotation devices, safety instructions, and courtesy transportation. Group outings can benefit from a $3 per person discount. Canoers can also choose a $240 season rental pass or a private boater season pass for $180.

Trapper John’s is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
