Hip-hop icon Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was found guilty of two charges related to prostitution but was acquitted of the most serious charge, racketeering conspiracy, in a significant Manhattan federal court case. Combs also faced and was acquitted of two sex trafficking charges concerning his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura and another woman identified as “Jane.”
Despite the split verdict, Combs was convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, with the possibility of a 10-year maximum sentence for each. Following this decision, U.S. District Court Judge Arun Subramanian denied Combs bail, highlighting violent behavior captured in 2016 hotel footage involving Combs and Ventura.
Combs’ legal team had sought his release on a $1 million bond, arguing that the nature of the prostitution charges differed significantly from the more severe allegations. However, the prosecution intends to recommend significant jail time. Sentencing is scheduled for October 3.
The trial, lasting six weeks, included testimonies from 34 prosecution witnesses, while the defense did not call any. The jury, comprising eight men and four women, deliberated for just over two days. The courtroom saw mixed reactions to the verdict, with Combs showing a moment of apparent prayer before being led out by marshals.
Cassie Ventura’s attorney praised her courage in bringing attention to the case, asserting this trial as a pivotal moment for justice in the entertainment industry. The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized the need to continue addressing sex crimes, acknowledging the bravery required from victims to pursue justice.
Initially indicted in September 2024, Combs faced charges including racketeering and sex trafficking. The prosecution argued Combs used his businesses as a front for a criminal enterprise involving sex trafficking and other illicit activities. However, the defense contended that while Combs has personal faults, these do not constitute a criminal organization.
The case featured notable testimonies, including rapper Kid Cudi, who claimed Combs was involved in a retaliatory act against him. Although prosecutors removed attempted kidnapping and arson charges from the racketeering allegations, they focused on sex trafficking and forced labor. The defense maintained that no direct evidence linked Combs to such acts.
After closing arguments, the jury was instructed to continue deliberations when they initially could not reach a verdict on racketeering conspiracy. The case remains under public scrutiny, with further developments anticipated.
