Diddy, currently incarcerated at FCI Fort Dix, recently faced a setback in his efforts toward sobriety. The music mogul was caught consuming homemade alcohol on prison grounds. The concoction, made by fermenting Fanta, sugar, and apples for at least two weeks, is a common method inmates use to produce alcohol inside the facility.
After being caught, Diddy was initially slated for transfer to a different unit within Fort Dix. However, prison officials decided against the move and allowed him to remain in his current lower-security unit, suggesting he has been given another chance. The leniency may be attributed to the nonviolent nature of the infraction and the facility’s lower-security classification.
Diddy’s struggle with alcohol addiction has been well documented. He previously cited alcohol as a significant factor in his legal troubles. Before his sentencing last October, he told Judge Arun Subramanian that he had achieved sobriety for the first time in 25 years. In a letter to the judge, Diddy wrote about his commitment to personal change, stating, “The old me died in jail and a new version of me was reborn. Prison will change you or kill you — I choose to live.”
Relapses are not uncommon for those battling addiction, especially after such a long struggle. However, this incident could negatively impact Diddy’s chances of early release. Notably, Diddy requested placement at Fort Dix specifically for its Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), which offers inmates the opportunity to reduce their sentences by up to a year if they maintain good behavior and avoid violent infractions.
Diddy began serving his sentence at Fort Dix just over a week ago, checking in on the eve of Halloween. His projected release date is May 8, 2028.
