The Rolling Stones will release an expanded edition of their 13th studio album, “Black and Blue,” with a “Super Deluxe” box set scheduled for release on Nov. 14 through Interscope/UMe. The set will include five previously unreleased songs.
The collection will be available in multiple formats, including a five-LP vinyl box set and a four-CD box set. Both will feature a Blu-ray disc, a replica tour poster, and a 100-page hardback book containing a new essay by Stones expert Paul Sexton, along with exclusive photographs from the album’s recording sessions and tour. A limited-edition vinyl version will also be pressed on black-and-blue marbled vinyl. Two-disc and single-disc versions will be available on both CD and vinyl.
Originally released in 1976, “Black and Blue” marked a transition for the Rolling Stones after guitarist Mick Taylor left the band. During the search for Taylor’s replacement, the group enlisted several notable guitarists to perform on the album, including Harvey Mandel of Canned Heat, session musician Wayne Perkins, Jeff Beck, and Memphis blues guitarist Robert A. Johnson. Ronnie Wood would ultimately join as a full-time member, appearing on three tracks on the album, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and featured songs such as “Hot Stuff,” “Fool to Cry,” “Memory Motel” and “Melody.”
The box set will include a six-track disc of previously unreleased material, such as the Mick Jagger and Keith Richards composition “I Love Ladies,” a cover of Shirley & Company’s “Shame, Shame, Shame,” and four instrumental jams from the 1975 sessions featuring the guest guitarists. A new video for “Shame, Shame, Shame,” directed by Dutch filmmaker Camille Boumans, is scheduled to debut Thursday, Sept. 25. The set will also feature a complete live concert from the band’s six-night residency at London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre.
The Blu-ray disc will contain a previously unreleased television broadcast of the Stones’ 1976 performance at Les Abattoirs in Paris, along with Dolby Atmos surround sound mixes of the studio album and the Earls Court live concert.
Producer Andrew Watt recently told Rolling Stone magazine that he is working with the band on new material, which could serve as a follow-up to the Stones’ Grammy-winning 24th studio album, “Hackney Diamonds,” released in 2023. Without sharing specifics, Watt said, “I’ve said it before, but it’s like working for Batman. When the tongue is up in the air, you just go. I can say we did some recording together, but that’s all I can say.”
