James Hetfield, frontman for Metallica, proposed to his girlfriend, fashion designer Adriana Gillett, during a scuba diving excursion on Friday, March 13.
Hetfield, 62, shared a photo of the underwater proposal on Metallica’s official Instagram account. The image shows Hetfield in scuba gear holding a sign reading, “Adriana Gillett Will You Marry Me?” Gillett, 45, is pictured next to him in the water, holding a ring box and giving a thumbs-up.
“She said yes!” read the caption on the post.
Gillett also posted the news on her Instagram account, writing, “The best birthday trip surprise. Swimming with whale sharks on Friday the 13th with the most unique, special and romantic proposal a Pisces could ever imagine. In a sea full of fish, we caught each other. Thank you God for putting us together.”
Hetfield filed for divorce from his wife of 25 years, costume designer Francesca Tomasi, in 2022. Hetfield and Tomasi have two daughters, Cali, 27, and Marcella, 24, and a son, Castor, 25. Hetfield and Gillett, a London native, reportedly began dating in 2023.
Metallica’s M72 World Tour will resume on May 9 at Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece, with subsequent shows scheduled for May 13 in Bucharest, Romania, and May 19 in Chorzow, Poland. The band will launch a 24-show run at the Sphere in Las Vegas on Oct. 1.
