Whooping Cough Case Reported at Coronado High School Parents Urged to Monitor Symptoms and Vaccinations

A case of whooping cough, or pertussis, has been reported at Coronado High School in Henderson, according to a letter sent to parents by the Southern Nevada Health District. The district stated that students may have been exposed to the disease between September 15 and October 8. Parents are urged to watch for symptoms in their children.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can result in persistent coughing spells lasting weeks or even months, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To help prevent further spread, the health district recommends that parents:

  • Contact their healthcare provider if their child shows any cold-like symptoms
  • Verify that their child’s immunizations against pertussis are up to date

  • Follow all health guidelines if their child is diagnosed with whooping cough

Monitoring symptoms and ensuring vaccination are key steps in controlling the spread of pertussis within the school community.
