The NBA board of governors is set to discuss potential expansion, with Las Vegas and Seattle emerging as leading candidates for new franchises. This marks a significant step in expansion talks that have been ongoing for years. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed caution, noting that expansion involves selling equity in the league, which isn’t necessarily beneficial if the league is thriving.
In Las Vegas, there are at least three groups prepared to bid for a new team. Prominent figures like LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, and Floyd Mayweather have shown interest in bringing the NBA to the city. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s Steve Hill has emphasized the city’s readiness and enthusiasm for hosting an NBA team.
On the infrastructure front, several groups are planning to develop NBA-ready arenas in Las Vegas. The Oak View Group, known for its global arena projects, has plans for a major development on Las Vegas Boulevard, although their exact site is currently undecided. Meanwhile, LVXP is eyeing the former Wet N’ Wild site for a 20,000-seat arena project, which includes hotel and theater components.
Both cities have a strong basketball culture and existing relationships with the NBA, making them attractive options for expansion. However, the final decision will depend on various factors, including financial evaluations and long-term league strategies.
