The Regional Transportation Commission in Las Vegas has been using double-decker buses for years, and now these buses are being manufactured locally in Southern Nevada. Alexander Dennis, a U.K.-based company known for producing double-decker buses globally, has opened a plant in North Las Vegas, marking the only such facility in North America.
The plant, staffed by 115 employees, is currently assembling 10 new diesel double-decker buses for the Regional Transportation Commission. Over the next year, more buses will be constructed, with plans to start producing zero-emission electric buses by 2026. The facility aims to increase its production capacity to around 75 buses annually.
Paul Soubry, CEO of New Flyer Industries, which owns Alexander Dennis, highlighted the strategic decision to establish the plant in Nevada due to its skilled workforce and the long-standing relationship with the commission. The location is advantageous for recruitment and skill development, unlike some of the company’s rural sites.
Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown praised the new facility for its potential to boost local employment and diversify the economy. They emphasized the importance of local manufacturing in fulfilling the Build America requirements, thereby creating jobs and stimulating the economy. The facility’s presence in North Las Vegas is expected to streamline the production process and reduce dependency on external suppliers.
