Las Vegas Seeks Temporary Ward 2 Council Member After Seaman Resigns

The Las Vegas City Council is currently accepting applications for Ward 2 residents interested in temporarily filling the seat vacated by former Councilwoman Victoria Seaman, who resigned for a federal job in Colorado. Rather than holding a costly special election—estimated at nearly $500,000—the Council opted to appoint an interim “caretaker” who will serve out the remainder of Seaman’s term, ending in 2026.

Applicants must reside in Ward 2, be eligible voters, and must sign a written pledge not to run for the seat in the 2026 election or interfere in that race. However, officials admit this pledge is unenforceable. The application period is open until 5 p.m. Friday.

The City Council has outlined a selection process: after reviewing applications, each council member will rank the candidates. The top three (or more in the case of a tie) will be invited to present their case in three-minute presentations at the next council meeting scheduled for September 17. The council will then choose the interim representative, who will not be eligible to run in the next election for the seat.

Seaman’s departure came just two years before her term was set to expire, and after she dropped out of a planned Clark County Commission run. The council cited significant cost savings and the temporary nature of the appointment as reasons for bypassing a special election. The chosen appointee will be responsible for representing about 127,000 residents in southwest Las Vegas until the term ends.
