Las Vegas Police Launch Largest Tesla Cybertruck Fleet in US for Patrol and Tactical Response

The Metropolitan Police Department in Las Vegas is deploying a new fleet of Tesla Cybertrucks, marking a significant shift toward electric vehicles in law enforcement. Sheriff Kevin McMahill introduced the 10 all-electric Cybertrucks, calling them “the future of policing.” Each Metro Area Command will receive one of the vehicles, and over 400 officers have already been trained to operate them.

The Cybertrucks, valued at a total of $8–$9 million, were fully funded by a donation from venture capitalist Ben Horowitz and his wife Felicia, making this the largest police fleet of Tesla trucks in the U.S.

These vehicles are heavily customized for police use. The interiors feature plastic rear seats separated by a barrier from the front cabin, and the exterior sports a black-and-white police wrap with emergency lights on all sides. The trucks are equipped with enhanced battery capacity to ensure they remain charged throughout a patrol shift, using public charging stations rather than a dedicated police network.

Designed for high-performance and tough conditions, the Cybertrucks will be used for critical incidents such as barricades and shootings. Each vehicle is outfitted with tactical gear, including ladders, shields, and less-than-lethal firearms, taking advantage of the truck’s larger storage capacity compared to traditional police vehicles. The officers assigned to these vehicles have received special training to use the additional tools for de-escalation.

Sheriff McMahill sees the introduction of the Cybertrucks not only as a way to improve safety and operational capacity but also as a recruiting asset and a trial run for broader adoption of electric vehicles in the department. The performance of these trucks will be closely monitored to help determine the future of electric policing in Las Vegas.
