Las Vegas Community Comes Together for 60th Annual Thanksgiving Meal at Catholic Charities

Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley emphasized the importance of ensuring everyone has the chance to celebrate Thanksgiving, highlighting it as a longstanding American tradition. She spoke from Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada’s annual Thanksgiving luncheon, an event that marked its 60th year of providing free holiday meals to the community.

The Berkley family, known as the “Berkley Brigade,” has volunteered at the event for nearly 35 years, often serving hot chocolate and taking their role seriously. Attorney General Aaron Ford’s family also participated, helping serve hot meals.

Catholic Charities prepared an extensive feast for the occasion, including 325 pounds each of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and green bean casserole, along with gallons of gravy, cranberry sauce, hot cocoa, and 750 slices of pumpkin pie. About 50 staff and 50 volunteers worked together to serve the meal, which is open to anyone in the community. Planning for the holiday meal began as early as April due to the expected demand, with about 750 meals prepared this year in response to an uptick in local families seeking assistance.

Sara Ramirez, president and CEO of Catholic Charities, described the luncheon as “the epitome of what Thanksgiving is about,” emphasizing the importance of community and shared experiences. She called the event “our Super Bowl,” noting that it’s about more than just food—it’s about creating core memories and offering comfort and support to those in need.

Paul Saunders, a participant in the nonprofit’s “Renewing Hope Program,” expressed gratitude for the support he received, highlighting the value of simple things like a warm meal and shelter. He shared that the only thing he could complain about was being given too much pie—a complaint he was happy to have.

Mayor Berkley praised Catholic Charities’ mission, stating that their work is essential to the community. The organization’s efforts ensure that those facing hardship can still experience the warmth and togetherness of Thanksgiving.
