Las Vegas Breaks Ground on New Athletics Ballpark at Former Tropicana Site

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Athletics’ new ballpark in Las Vegas is set to take place on June 23 at 8 a.m. The stadium, which will have a capacity of 33,000 fans and cost $1.75 billion, will be located on a portion of the former Tropicana hotel site. The stadium site occupies 9 acres of the 35-acre area, with Bally’s Corp. planning to develop an integrated resort on the remaining land.

Initial construction work began in late April, and the groundbreaking event will serve as a celebration for the Athletics and local and state officials involved in the project. Key attendees will include A’s owners and executives, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, and members of the state Legislature and Clark County Commission.

The project is receiving up to $380 million in public funding, which was approved during a special legislative session in 2023. This funding consists of state tax credits and revenue from a special tax district created by Clark County for the site. Clark County will finance its $120 million share through bonds, which will be repaid over 30 years using tax district revenue. An additional $25 million will be allocated for infrastructure improvements around the ballpark.

The Athletics will cover the remaining project costs and are seeking investors for minority shares in the MLB club. After exploring potential relocation sites since 2021, the team chose the Tropicana site in April 2023 following the MLB’s approval to move from Oakland.

The construction is planned to take 32 months, with the stadium slated to open for the 2028 MLB season. Meanwhile, the Athletics will play at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento from this year until the completion of the new ballpark.
