Grand Canyon Sees 13 Helicopter Rescues Last Week Amidst Rising Heat Warnings

With rising temperatures at Grand Canyon National Park, there has been a surge in helicopter rescues, totaling thirteen in the past week. The National Park Service attributes this increase to heat-related emergencies, including heat illness, dehydration, hyponatremia, and lower leg injuries. As temperatures are expected to reach triple digits, the park urges hikers, particularly those on strenuous routes like rim-to-rim, to be self-reliant and cautious.

Hikers are advised to begin their excursions early, avoid the inner canyon during peak heat hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and ensure they carry sufficient water and food. Due to limited staffing and high call volumes, assistance may be delayed, emphasizing the importance of making smart decisions to ensure personal safety.
