UNLV’s football team showed significant improvement in their recent game, securing a 38-21 victory over Sam Houston. This win marked their second under coach Dan Mullen and highlighted their effective adjustments made during practice. Junior transfer quarterback Anthony Colandrea was instrumental in the win, completing 19 of 23 passes for 249 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He also added a 13-yard rushing touchdown.
Defensively, UNLV showcased a much stronger performance compared to their previous outing against Idaho State. They limited Sam Houston to just 1 of 12 on third down conversions and managed to contain the Bearkats’ offense, allowing only a few significant plays. The Rebels built a commanding 24-7 lead by halftime, despite some self-inflicted penalties that slightly hindered their progress.
Offensively, Colandrea demonstrated versatility by connecting with multiple receivers, with Jaden Bradley being a standout, recording six catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. The team’s offensive strategy effectively spread the ball among eight different players, ensuring a varied and unpredictable attack.
UNLV’s defense also contributed significantly, with a key interception returned for a touchdown by Aamaris Brown. This solidified their lead and underscored the defensive improvements made.
Overall, the Rebels controlled the game, amassing 238 yards in the first half and averaging 7.7 yards per play, compared to Sam Houston’s 3.9. They continued this dominance into the second half, quickly extending their lead with efficient drives and strong defensive stops.
Looking ahead, UNLV faces a more challenging opponent in UCLA on September 6 at Allegiant Stadium. Coach Mullen acknowledged the team’s potential, emphasizing the importance of minimizing errors while capitalizing on their strengths.
