Local law enforcement agencies in Clark County, including the Metropolitan Police Department and the city of Las Vegas, have initiated their annual campaign against illegal fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July celebrations. Since June 20, authorities have confiscated approximately 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks and issued citations to nearly 60 individuals, as reported by Metro Capt. Jonathan Riddle.
The crackdown is aimed at ensuring safety during the holiday, focusing on the regulation that only “Safe and Sane” fireworks are permitted for use during select holidays like July 4. These legal fireworks are available from more than 160 licensed vendors across the county, with sales running from the upcoming Saturday through July 4. The Fire Prevention Association of Nevada has tested these fireworks to confirm their safety, according to Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Dailey.
“Safe and Sane” fireworks are designed to remain low to the ground, contrasting with illegal varieties that often shoot into the air and can unpredictably ignite fires, especially in the dry desert environment. Riddle emphasized the potential danger from sparks of illegal fireworks, which can cause serious fires affecting homes and communities.
Fines for possessing illegal fireworks are steep, ranging from $500 to $10,000, based on the quantity seized. Metro’s enforcement efforts include both patrol and covert operations throughout the Las Vegas Valley, with fire inspectors working alongside officers to seize illegal items.
Additionally, the public is encouraged to report illegal fireworks through ispyfireworks.com, a platform that recorded over 11,000 complaints last year. These reports help law enforcement allocate resources effectively. Citizens are urged to purchase only “Safe and Sane” fireworks and report any illegal activities to local authorities.
