With the Real ID regulations now in effect at airports, confusion persists among some travelers regarding acceptable forms of identification. The TSA has clarified that a Costco membership card is not a valid form of Real ID. Despite being a photo ID, it does not meet the federal or state-issued requirements of a Real ID or an enhanced driver’s license.
The misunderstanding may stem from TSA’s efforts to assist travelers without a Real ID by allowing them to present other forms of identification, like a standard driver’s license, to verify their identity. However, this is not a guaranteed solution, and travelers are encouraged to have a valid Real ID when flying.
As of late May, 93% of travelers have been using compliant IDs, and the new rules, effective from May 7, are being enforced smoothly. A Real ID-compliant driver’s license can be identified by a star in one of its upper corners. Other acceptable forms of identification include a passport, passport card, and Global Entry card, among others. For a complete list, travelers are advised to check the TSA’s website.
