Beloved Cheers Actor George Wendt Dies at 76, Leaving a Lasting Legacy

George Wendt, the cherished comedian and actor best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the sitcom “Cheers,” has passed away at the age of 76. According to his family, Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at his home.

Wendt’s portrayal of Norm on “Cheers,” a show that aired from 1982 to 1993, earned him widespread acclaim and six consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations. His character became a cultural touchstone, symbolizing the everyman with his regular presence at the bar.

Born in Chicago, Wendt was also the uncle of actor Jason Sudeikis. He had been married to Bernadette Birkett since 1978, and together they had three children. Beyond “Cheers,” Wendt starred in his own short-lived series, “The George Wendt Show,” in 1995 and continued to make appearances in various television shows and films, including “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Saturday Night Live.”

In 2024, Wendt and some of his “Cheers” castmates, including Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer, reunited at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, highlighting the enduring legacy of the show and its impact on television history. Wendt’s passing marks the end of an era for fans of the beloved sitcom and those who appreciated his comedic talents.

It may be interesting to note that Wendt passed on the anniversary date of the last episode of Cheers, that aired on NBC-TV, May 20,1993.
