Chinatown in Clark County is set for significant redevelopment following its designation as a redevelopment area. This multi-phase project, expected to span over a decade, aims to revitalize the area, making it more appealing to both tourists and locals. The project, spearheaded by County Commissioner Justin Jones, intends to transform outdated and blighted areas into a cohesive hub of high-quality dining and shopping.
The redevelopment plan, which has been in progress since May 2024, will redirect sales and property tax revenue towards funding the improvements. The first phase involves constructing a pedestrian walkway between Chinatown Plaza and Shanghai Plaza, with completion targeted by Lunar New Year in 2026. Following this, phase two will commence in the first quarter of the next year, focusing on resurfacing Spring Mountain Road.
The most extensive phase, phase three, proposes the removal of a westbound lane on Spring Mountain Road to expand sidewalks and enhance pedestrian accessibility. This phase is expected to begin in 2027. Additionally, the project will incorporate public art, increase greenery, improve security measures, and enhance lighting to foster a more cohesive environment.
The estimated cost of roadway improvements is projected to exceed $30 million, with the total redevelopment costs anticipated to reach tens of millions of dollars. The final proposal for these enhancements is expected to be finalized and adopted by the commission in September.
