Michael J. Fox took home one of the highest honors at the 2026 Emmy Awards. The Television Academy presented Fox with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, recognizing his years of advocacy and fundraising for Parkinson’s disease research.
Fox received a standing ovation as he stepped onto the stage at the Peacock Theater. His wife, Tracy Pollan, joined him for their first Emmys appearance in more than a decade.
The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, created in 2002, goes to someone in television who has made a significant impact through charity work. Previous recipients include Oprah Winfrey and Ted Turner.
Fox spoke openly about his Parkinson’s diagnosis and how it changed his life. He first learned he had the disease in 1991 at age 29 and did not share the news publicly for several years.
He told the audience that he feared how people would react if they knew he was living with Parkinson’s. He wondered if he would lose his place in the industry. Instead, he described the support he received as overwhelming and said it made him feel like he could keep working.
Fox founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000. The group has raised over $1.5 billion for Parkinson’s research. During his speech, Fox said the foundation is “close” to finding a cure, giving hope to many living with the disease.
After the ceremony, social media filled with messages of praise for Fox. Many viewers called him an inspiration and celebrated his honesty and courage.
Fox’s acting career includes starring roles in Family Ties and Spin City, both of which earned him multiple Emmys. At this year’s ceremony, the spotlight shifted to his years of work supporting medical research.
