AC/DC singer Brian Johnson says he is enjoying performing as an older musician more than he did in the past.
Johnson’s comments differ from those of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who recently told reporters there was “nothing good about ageing.” Johnson is 78, while Jagger is 82.
In a recent interview with USA Today, Johnson said he finds live shows more enjoyable now. “I think it’s still the unknown,” Johnson said in a video interview. “You’re all rehearsed; you know your parts. But the unpredictability keeps you on edge, to be your best.”
Guitarist Angus Young, 71, chimed in, “I just worry about if I’m going to trip over… That’s about it.” Johnson agreed, adding the band has learned to focus on their presence on stage. “You can’t just immediately do things. You have to learn to watch each other. We’re doing things now that we didn’t think of before. Interacting.
“It’s just more fun, because you don’t care anymore. When you’re young you take yourself very seriously. I never used to smile or anything because that’s what you thought you were supposed to do.”
AC/DC launched the North American leg of their Power Up Tour on July 11, playing a 21-song set. The band has suggested on social media that this could be the final stretch of the tour that started in May 2024. The last scheduled show is Sept. 29 in Philadelphia.
Neither Johnson nor Young commented on the band’s future. When asked about AC/DC’s legacy, Young said he hopes people say, “A great rock band.” Johnson added, “They were great at what they did. And they did it consistently. You never thought back in the day—when I finish here I’m going to be 79!” Johnson also thanked the band’s multi-generational fan base, saying, “I’d love to thank them all one by one.”
