Mount Carmel to Replace Franklinton ER with New Primary Care Center This August

Mount Carmel will close its Franklinton emergency room later this year and open a primary and preventive care center in the neighborhood, the healthcare provider announced Wednesday.

The ER will close Aug. 22, and the new facility will open Aug. 24 in the Fortuity Building. Mount Carmel said the new center will offer walk-in primary care with extended hours. Leaders hope the move will improve long-term health and reduce unnecessary emergency visits.

“This change is about making it easier for people to get the right care at the right time at an affordable price,” Brian Pierson, Mount Carmel South Region president, said in a statement. “We are growing smarter with the community and matching our services with what the neighborhood needs now and in the future.”

Mount Carmel said most visitors to the Franklinton ER do not need emergency care, and it is the most expensive setting for treatment. After the closure, the nearest ER will be about two miles away at Grant Medical Center on Grant Avenue.

All staff from the Franklinton ER will be reassigned to other sites, and Mount Carmel said it remains committed to serving the community.

“Mount Carmel has been part of this community for 140 years, and the commitment remains as strong as ever,” Pierson said. “We are changing with our communities to ensure we continue providing the care people need most.”

The current facility is located at the former Mount Carmel West hospital, which moved to Grove City in 2019.
