COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio lawmakers are considering a bill that would change when teens can start learning to drive and how long they must practice before getting a license.
Senate Bill 419 would allow teens to get a learner’s permit at age 15, instead of the current 15 and a half. The bill would also require teens to hold that permit for one year before applying for a driver’s license, doubling the current six-month requirement.
David Berk, owner of Faith Driving School, said students who start driving earlier tend to feel more confident and less anxious behind the wheel.
State data show teen drivers were at fault in 72% of fatal traffic crashes involving teens in 2023. There were 110 fatal crashes involving teen drivers last year, according to the Ohio Traffic Safety Office.
Berk said more supervised time on the road helps teens gain experience and confidence. He added that driving with parents can strengthen family relationships and help teens learn responsible habits.
The bill must still pass the Ohio House before it can become law.
