The Detroit Pistons are heading into a pivotal Game 3 with all the momentum against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon. Detroit stunned Cleveland by taking the first two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals and now carries a 2-0 series lead into Rocket Arena for a nationally televised showdown at 3 p.m. ET.
The story of the series so far has been the emergence of Cade Cunningham as a true postseason star. Cunningham dominated Game 2 with 25 points and 10 assists, repeatedly taking over in crunch time while controlling the pace offensively. Detroit’s balanced attack has also overwhelmed Cleveland, with veterans like Tobias Harris and sharpshooter Duncan Robinson delivering timely scoring around Cunningham.
For Cleveland, the pressure is enormous. Teams that fall behind 3-0 in an NBA playoff series almost never recover, making Saturday essentially a must-win game. Donovan Mitchell has done his part offensively, including a 31-point effort in Game 2, but the Cavaliers have struggled with turnovers, inconsistent shooting, and limited production from key contributors outside Mitchell and Jarrett Allen. Cleveland also needs much more from James Harden, who has battled inefficiency and turnovers throughout the series.
One major factor to watch in Game 3 will be Cleveland’s home-court advantage. The Cavaliers have been strong at Rocket Arena this postseason, and oddsmakers still view them as favorites despite the 0-2 deficit. Detroit, however, has looked fearless on both ends of the floor, using physical defense and disciplined ball movement to dictate the series tempo.
If the Pistons can steal another road victory, they will move within one win of a stunning trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. If Cleveland responds, the series could quickly regain its expected intensity. Either way, Game 3 feels like the turning point of the series.
