COLUMBUS, Ohio — COSI is preparing for a weekend of hands-on activities during its Big Science Celebration.
Joe Wood previewed one of the interactive experiments that visitors can try. Wearing gloves and goggles, they demonstrated “elephant toothpaste,” a popular science activity that creates a foamy eruption.
The experiment uses hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and yeast. The yeast contains an enzyme called catalase, which breaks down hydrogen peroxide and releases oxygen gas. The gas gets trapped in the soap, creating bubbles and causing the foam to overflow. Wood said the reaction also produces heat, which participants can feel during the demonstration.
While at-home versions use common household items and are safe, COSI’s demonstration uses stronger materials for a larger effect.
This experiment is one of many activities planned for COSI’s Science Festival. The festival runs for three days and includes community events before the main celebration.
The Big Science Celebration will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at COSI. The event features live demonstrations, hands-on activities and interactive learning for visitors of all ages.
