Columbus Filmmaker’s Psychological Thriller Debuts on Tubi

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A new psychological thriller filmed in Columbus is now streaming on Tubi, one of the internet’s largest digital platforms.

“Ava and the Boy She Loved,” created by Columbus-based filmmaker Dom Campbell, blends elements of romance and suspense. The film follows the character Ava, who recounts past events during an interrogation, with the story unfolding through flashbacks.

“Haunted by an affair that ended in tragedy, a woman loses her grip on reality as a relentless cop uncovers how far her mind will go to hide the truth,” according to the film’s online description.

Campbell, founder of Emperium Studios, credits much of the project’s success to collaboration with local artists and organizations.

“Working with local organizations and talent felt especially inspiring,” Campbell said. “The support for the arts here is real and deeply felt.”

Vivica Cartier stars as Ava, marking her first leading role after appearing in smaller parts in previous Emperium productions. The supporting cast includes Tarik Woods as Jared, Veon Selman as Malik Turner and Brianna Farris as Gabby. Campbell served as writer, director, producer, cinematographer and editor, and also played the detective.

Co-producer Meshach Malley rounded out the crew, serving as first assistant director, and handling lighting and sound. According to the film’s blog, Campbell and Malley were the only crew members for about 90% of production days.

“Their partnership was one rooted in rhythm and instinct, a return to how they first began making films,” the blog states. “With combined years of experience behind them, the two transformed a passion project into a trending title on Tubi.”

Produced on a limited budget, the film features cinematic visuals, dramatic lighting and seamless editing. Scenes include several recognizable Columbus landmarks.

“We love telling stories that resonate with audiences around the world, while showcasing Ohio’s unique landscape,” Campbell said.

“Ava and the Boy She Loved” has a runtime of 75 minutes and is the ninth feature in Emperium Studios’ catalog.
