Sabrina Carpenter is set to produce and star in a musical film adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” for Universal Pictures, in collaboration with director Lorene Scafaria.
Multiple media outlets reported Tuesday that Carpenter, a pop singer and actress, recently signed a deal to move forward with the project. The announcement comes five years after it was first reported that Carpenter would lead a musical reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel for Netflix through her company, At Last Productions. That earlier version was to feature a screenplay by Ross Evans and was described as a contemporary retelling set around a music festival called “Wonderland.” The new version, however, will be written and directed by Scafaria, with plot details currently undisclosed.
Billboard has reached out to Carpenter’s representatives for further comment.
Carpenter has focused primarily on her music career in recent years, releasing the albums “Short n’ Sweet” in 2024 and “Man’s Best Friend” in 2025, both of which topped the Billboard 200. She has also won two Grammy Awards during this time. Carpenter’s acting credits include roles in the Netflix films “Work It” and “Tall Girl,” 20th Century Fox’s “The Hate U Give,” and Disney+’s “Clouds.” She began her career starring in Disney Channel’s “Girl Meets World.”
The film will also be produced by Marc Platt, through his Universal-backed Marc Platt Productions, as well as Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment.
This new adaptation joins a long line of “Alice in Wonderland” films, including Disney’s 1951 animated classic and Tim Burton’s live-action version starring Mia Wasikowska, who reprised her role in a sequel directed by James Bobin.
