Dua Lipa Surprises Fans with Billie Joe Armstrong Duet at San Francisco Concert

SAN FRANCISCO — Dua Lipa was joined by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong for a performance of “Wake Me Up When September Ends” during her Sunday night concert at the Chase Center.

The surprise collaboration occurred toward the end of Lipa’s Oct. 12 show, part of her Radical Optimism Tour. Throughout the tour, Lipa has covered songs by local artists in each city, but this performance was notable because Armstrong, whose band formed in the Bay Area, appeared on stage to perform with her.

“Every night we do a different song, we do a surprise song, and we do a song by a local artist,” Lipa told the audience before Armstrong joined her. “I immediately thought about San Francisco, and I thought about all of the incredible music that has come out of here. I thought about one band in particular that would be perfect tonight.”

“I love this band for so many different reasons,” Lipa continued. “I love them because of their rawness, their authenticity, the message behind it, the space it holds for people who feel like sometimes they might not belong.”

As the crowd cheered, Lipa introduced Armstrong: “Join me in welcoming the incredible Billie Joe from Green Day.”

A guitarist played the opening riff of “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” which was released in 2004 and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005. Lipa and Armstrong alternated lead vocals, briefly transforming Lipa’s pop show into a rock concert.

Lipa’s Radical Optimism Tour began in November 2024 and is scheduled to conclude in December with three shows in Mexico City. Previous covers during the tour have included “Royals” by Lorde in New Zealand and “One Last Time” by Ariana Grande in Miami. Other guest appearances have included Gwen Stefani, who joined Lipa to perform “Don’t Speak” in Los Angeles earlier in October.
