A Japanese city, Toyoake in Aichi Prefecture, is considering a new ordinance to limit residents’ screen time to two hours per day outside of work and school activities. Mayor Masafumi Koki announced that the city’s assembly will soon vote on this draft ordinance. The proposal is non-binding and does not include any penalties for violations. It also suggests that elementary school children end screen time by 9 p.m., and middle school and older children by 10 p.m. The initiative aims to mitigate potential negative impacts on health and daily life from excessive screen use. This comes in response to a survey indicating that young people in Japan average about five hours of screen time per day during the week.
