Bernie Leadon, cofounder of the Eagles, is set to release his first album in more than 20 years. Titled “Too Late to Be Cool,” the album will be available on Oct. 10.
Earlier this week, Leadon unveiled a new video for the album’s first single, “Too Many Memories.” Along with the album’s announcement, the second single, “Just a Little,” has also been released.
“I love this album,” Leadon stated in a press release. “We took time to make sure the songs were in good keys for my voice. The three-piece band and myself were all sitting in the same room or where we could see one another well. Many were first or very early takes. I even sang live on about three songs.”
Leadon’s last solo album, “Mirror,” was released in 2004. The artist, whose career began with Dillard & Clark and the Flying Burrito Brothers, has had a long wait between albums. In 1971, he co-founded the Eagles with Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Randy Meisner. Leadon left the band in 1975 to work as a session musician for artists such as Emmylou Harris, Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, and Stephen Stills.
The 11 tracks on “Too Late to Be Cool” were written by Leadon and produced and engineered by Glyn Johns, who worked on the Eagles’ first two albums. Leadon’s backing band includes bassist Glenn Worf, drummer Greg Morrow, and keyboardist Tony Harrell. The first single, “Too Many Memories,” was released in July.
Leadon was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 as a member of the Eagles. He reunited with the band for the History of the Eagles Tour from 2013 to 2015. In 2016, he performed at the Grammy Awards alongside Jackson Browne and the surviving Eagles members, paying tribute to Glenn Frey with a rendition of “Take It Easy.”
While no tour dates are currently scheduled, Leadon will perform his first show in a decade at Americanafest in Nashville next month.
“I hope you all enjoy it,” Leadon said of his upcoming album. “Hope you find something that sticks with you, in a good way. I’m so grateful we can all still do this, sincerely.”
