Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift both dated Jonas Brothers members simultaneously, but the enduring story is the friendship that blossomed between the two women.
During an appearance on Jake Shane’s “Therapuss” podcast, posted Wednesday, Aug. 6, Gomez, the founder of Rare Beauty, reminisced about her initial connection with Swift nearly 20 years ago. “Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers,” Gomez said with a laugh. “I dated Nick, and she dated Joe. We all know and love each other now, and it’s so cute. We didn’t know what we were doing.”
Gomez added, “She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other. I was about 15, she was about 18, and that’s when it was the crazy, curly [hair] Taylor, and she had all these bracelets that went all the way up [her arm]. We became best friends, bonded over the breakup, as girls do. Then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after, and here we are now, 16 years later.”
Gomez and Swift have remained close. After their relationships with the Jonas Brothers, they have continued to support each other professionally. In March, Swift, a 14-time Grammy winner, praised Gomez’s collaborative album with fiancé Benny Blanco, “I Said I Love You First.” In May, Gomez congratulated Swift on reclaiming her masters.
Just weeks before her podcast appearance, Swift sent Gomez home-baked sourdough bread to celebrate Gomez’s collaboration with Blanco, playfully referencing Swift’s 2009 hit, “Love Story.”
On “Therapuss,” Gomez shared that “Love Story” was the first song Swift played for her before its release. “I was in a hotel room, and I remember it vividly,” Gomez told Shane. “It was just one of those songs that I instantly heard and thought, ‘This is one of the most beautiful songs ever."”
Gomez recalled, “It was so sweet. She was like, ‘OK, I just want to play you this song, but just, like, I don’t know. It’s going to be the first single, I think.’ Just hearing her say those little thoughts … She is a chameleon. She’s incredible.”
