The Clark County School Board has approved a nearly $4 billion budget for fiscal year 2026. This decision follows a challenging period for the school district’s finances, including the dismissal of the former Chief Financial Officer due to budget miscalculations. The current budget allocation includes significant funds for various educational needs: nearly $727 million for special education, $220 million for English learner-weighted funding, and $228 million for at-risk students.
Interim CFO Diane Bartholomew and Chief Strategy Officer Kellie Kowal-Paul highlighted that the budget is a projection, with uncertainties regarding state and federal contributions. With 80% of CCSD’s general fund relying on state funding, the ongoing Nevada Legislature session adds unpredictability to the district’s financial planning. The board discussed potential challenges, such as the impact of federal funding changes and past fiscal missteps, including incorrect calculations for teacher raises and at-risk funding.
In response to these challenges, trustees have received additional training to enhance their understanding and oversight of budgetary matters. The board aims to prevent past issues and ensure a more stable financial trajectory for the district.
