Former Raider QB Derek Carr Retires from NFL Due To Shoulder Injury

Derek Carr, a prominent quarterback known for his record-breaking performances with the Raiders, has announced his retirement from the NFL following a serious shoulder injury. Carr, who played nine seasons with the Raiders before spending his final two with the New Orleans Saints, was forced to retire due to the lingering effects of a right shoulder injury sustained late last season. Medical evaluations revealed a labral tear and significant degenerative changes in his rotator cuff, leading Carr to conclude that further treatment would not restore his shoulder to optimal condition.

Carr was widely appreciated for his contributions on and off the field, expressing gratitude for his NFL journey and the support from teammates, coaches, and fans. He was originally drafted by the Raiders in 2014 and holds several franchise records, including passing yards, touchdowns, completions, and passer rating. Despite his individual achievements, team success was limited, with Carr leading the Raiders to the playoffs only twice.

Carr’s retirement comes after a tumultuous period for the Raiders, which included multiple coaching changes and strategic overhauls. His departure from the Raiders was marked by a benching decision by then-coach Josh McDaniels, leading to his release and subsequent signing with the Saints on a lucrative contract. Carr’s retirement means forfeiting his $30 million guaranteed salary for 2025, though the Saints will not reclaim a $10 million roster bonus he received.

The Saints now face uncertainty at the quarterback position, with recent draft pick Tyler Shough likely to compete for the starting role. Carr’s career concludes with significant statistical achievements and a legacy of leadership both on and off the field.
