American Becomes Pope: Pope Leo XIV

Robert Prevost, a Chicago-born missionary with extensive experience in Peru, has made history as the first pope from the United States. Taking the name Leo XIV, Prevost emphasized a message of peace, dialogue, and missionary evangelization from the outset of his papacy. His election marks a significant moment, as there had long been a reluctance to elect a U.S. pope due to the country’s global influence. However, Prevost’s Peruvian citizenship and his deep ties to the region helped pave the way for his election.

Prevost’s path to the papacy was marked by a series of significant appointments by his predecessor, Pope Francis. He was brought to the Vatican in 2023 to lead the office responsible for vetting bishop nominations, a critical role in the Catholic Church. His elevation to the rank of cardinal further positioned him as a prominent figure in the conclave.

The election was historic not just for its outcome, but also for being the most geographically diverse conclave. The announcement of Prevost’s election was met with jubilation in St. Peter’s Square, with the crowd celebrating the first American pope. Although he addressed the crowd in Italian and Spanish, he notably did not speak in English.

Choosing the name Leo XIV, Prevost aligns himself with the legacy of Leo XIII, known for his focus on social justice and reform, suggesting a continuation of some of Francis’ priorities. As a member of the Augustinian order, Prevost’s background emphasizes poverty, service, and evangelization, values that are rooted in the teachings of St. Augustine.

Prevost’s journey from missionary to pope is also intertwined with his deep connection to Peru, where he served as an archbishop and acquired citizenship. His work in Peru and later roles in the Vatican have been pivotal in shaping his path to the papacy, culminating in his historic election. The news of his election was celebrated in Peru, where many expressed hope for a papal visit.
