Las Vegas Horse Owner Chasing Kentucky Derby Dreams

The pursuit of the Kentucky Derby victory is a testament to the enduring dedication and passion of Ron Winchell and his late father, Verne. Despite numerous attempts with 13 horses over the years, including close calls with runners-up, the elusive Derby trophy has yet to grace their collection. The Winchells have experienced the thrill of victory in other prominent races, but the Triple Crown events remain a coveted goal.

Ron Winchell’s commitment to horse racing is driven by the challenge and allure of the sport, a passion shared with his father. This year, they pin their hopes on Tiztastic, co-owned with prominent partners and trained by Steve Asmussen. Tiztastic’s surprising rise as a Derby contender followed a standout performance in the Louisiana Derby, overcoming initial struggles and setbacks with other horses.

The journey has been marked by highs and lows, such as the near-victory with Epicenter in 2022, which ended in disappointment but was later softened by the colt’s accolades. Tiztastic, though not yet as distinguished as Epicenter, shows promise with his laid-back temperament and recent successes.

Ron Winchell remains optimistic, looking forward to future races and a promising group of young horses. Even if Tiztastic doesn’t secure the long-awaited Derby win, the pursuit continues, fueled by the hope of one day claiming the trophy that has eluded his family for so long.
