As we age, certain things become less appealing to deal with, whether on a daily or weekly basis. When I noticed Reddit user u/XmasJ posed the question, “What are you simply getting too old for?”, I felt compelled to share their responses to see if you can relate. Here are some of the replies:
1. “Arguing with others. It reminds me of Keanu Reeves, who once said in an interview that as he’s gotten older, he maintains his peace by not arguing. He said, ‘2+2 is 5? You are correct. Have a nice day."”
2. “Concerts without assigned seating. I refuse to arrive hours early to secure a good spot only to be stuck there the whole time without a chance to sit or visit the bathroom without losing my view.”
3. “Hangovers. Taking three days to feel normal again is now too much and not worth it.”
4. “I used to enjoy going to the bar on weekends, playing darts, and listening to bands. Now it’s just crowded, with annoying people, loud music, and overpriced drinks. I’ll still show up for food or to watch a game, but more likely during happy hour.”
5. “Anything starting past 9 p.m.”
“I wish I could express this more often. Anything that requires me to be out past 9 p.m. is an inconvenience.”
6. “Putting up with nonsense. At 64, I’m retiring soon and have filed for divorce. I’m done with all of it. I’ve looked into buying a co-op condo in a 55+ community. My employer thinks they can call me for advice post-retirement; they can’t because they’ve been toxic. My husband thought he could continue treating me poorly, but I’m done with his behavior. I’ve shown him a list of reasons to leave, and the ‘stay’ list was blank. I’m not too old to start a new chapter.”
7. “Lack of sleep. All-nighters used to be manageable, but now they leave me useless.”
“I’ve always felt all-nighters ruin the next day. I’ve realized it’s not worth it anymore, especially with more responsibilities than I had as a teenager staying up all night gaming.” —u/trevorasaurus
8. “Caring for people who don’t care about me.”
9. “Sitting on the floor.”
“I can still sit on the floor, but I can’t get up without making a lot of noise.”
10. “New slang.”
“When someone said ‘no cap,’ I had no idea what it meant. I’m 35. I understand now, but it’s beyond silly.”
11. “Waiting in line.”
“As a 33-year-old rollercoaster enthusiast, I’m questioning if the thrill is worth the wait.”
12. “This heat. I used to enjoy beach activities and swimming, but now I dread going out in the sun, preferring to stay in my air-conditioned home.” —u/stellardaisy
13. “Camping on the ground.”
“No more tenting unless there’s a cot or air mattress. With a bad knee and less agility, it’s difficult.”
14. “Going places without a nearby bathroom. Not necessarily ‘too old,’ more like ‘too IBS."”
15. “Skinny jeans.”
“Ironically, since skinny jeans are ‘out,’ wearing them is now an ‘old guy’ thing. A man in skinny jeans, Chuck Taylor’s, and a tight T-shirt is likely closer to 40 than 20.”
16. “Work.”
“I was once enthusiastic, moving up, sideways, and down to advance. Now at 40, I just want to cook, exercise, talk to friends, play games, watch TV, and sleep well. My views on capitalism are changing.”
17. “Not being comfortable. I’m over it. Give me a pillow, legroom, a bench in the shower, and a fluffy towel. I want space to live and quality over quantity, and I’m happy to pay extra for upgrades.”
